Beatrix Potter Beatrix Potter

In 1901 an illustrated story called The tale of Peter Rabbit was published. It appeared without notice in a small edition published privately by it's author Beatrix Potter but the idea first came from a picture letter sent to Noel Moore, the son of her former governess, eight years earlier in 1893. Within a year it had been taken up by a commercial publisher and became an instant best seller. It and the twenty-two other little books that followed make up what is now one the most successful children's series in the world.

Noddy Noddy

Noddy was created by Children's book writer, Enid Blyton ( 1897 - 1968 ) and was first published in 1949. The original illustrations were drawn by a Dutch artist, Harmsen van der Beek but various artists have drawn the character since his death in 1953. Since the first publication, over 154 books have been published of various shapes and sizes and many items of merchandising have been produced including nursery china, figures and toys and games.

Paddington Bear Paddington Bear

Paddington Bear was the creation of author Michael Bond and started life as a present purchased for his wife in 1956 from Selfridges in London. He shot to success in 1958 when the first Paddington book was published and since then, the bear from darkest Peru, with a liking for marmalade, has been published in numerous languages throughout the world. He has also appeared on various merchandising from nurseryware, children's clothing and soft toys and has even appeared on a credit card issued by the Mitsui Bank in Japan.

Rupert The Bear Rupert The Bear

Rupert the Bear is one of the most popular characters ever created and is instantly recognizable in his red jumper, bright yellow checked trousers and scarf. He made his debut in the Daily Express newspaper on November 8th 1920 and was created by Canterbury lady, Mary Tourtell. Since his debut, millions of Rupert books have been sold and countless merchandising products have been manufactured from nursery china and figures to soft toys.

Thomas The Tank Engine Thomas The Tank Engine

Thomas the Tank Engine lives at a station on the Isle of Sodor. He is a blue engine with six wheels, a short stumpy funnel and a short stumpy boiler. He has many friends who work at the station, Gordon the big blue engine, James the red engine and Edward, Percy, Henry and Toby. Sir Topham Hatt, also known as the fat controller is in charge of all the engines at the station which is very busy.

Even though they dress and speak like humans, they each exhibit their uniquely defining animal characteristics.

Winnie the Pooh Winnie the Pooh

Winnie the Pooh made his first appearance in book form in 1924 with the publication of When We Were Very Young. It was written by A. A. Milne , the father of Christopher Robin, and illustarted by E.H.Shepard. Since his first appearance, the adventures of Pooh Bear and his friends have been printed in 32 different languages and have also appeared on a wide range of merchandising from pottery, postage stamps and bedlinen, to street signs in Warsaw and Oslo.
